I can imagine it now.
Some little Asian kid in the second grade is going to be taunted about whether or not he is carrying a gun. What happened yesterday at Virginia Tech is so tragic. I read it on CNN in the middle of my training. I couldn't believe what I was reading. What could have caused anyone to think they could take other lives? I followed the news closely today and found out as soon as the websites refreshed, that the gunman was identified as a South Korean immigrant who came in 1992 through Detroit. Geez--close to home. Almost immediately, racial comments evaded blog networks like
Technorati about how selfish immigrants are and everthing focused on the guy being Asian. Issues like new reports of him being "disturbed" and a "loner" were surpassed by his out-of-country origin.
VA Tech made it to the front page of all newspapers for all the wrong reasons yesterday, but it does not justify starting hate in retaliation. Most mass-homicides are statistically due to white males, but you don't see me grabbing onto my loved ones when I walk by a white male down the street. We don't need to beget hate from what Cho Seung-Hui did. Our nation has inherent conflicts due to its diversity. Everyday, we take steps backwards and take some forward, but we have to try our best to continually move forward and bring hatred and prejudice to their demise.
Cho allowed his anger to swallow him. White, Tan, Black, Green... it doesn't matter. I think that the lesson should be more about
loving people in our lives. Maybe he chose to be a loner, but I would bet that there was more to it than his choices of isolation. Apparently, the first girl that died in the dorms was his girlfriend. Wow... and I've seen no mention of his family. I guess they allowed police to do searches last night, but have no answered their door for the public.
His classmate posted his plays on AOL today.
Read the plays here. His writings are juvenile and clearly definitive of his own thoughts. He was so disturbed, but please, don't start making blanket statements about immigrants and Asians because one brother fell.
That little Asian kid who will be taunted for possibly having a gun will remember the taunts. That little Asian kid could one day be another Cho. We can't be so careless with our futures.
My prayers for people everywhere.
